Ten top tips for becoming chartered

Ten top tips for becoming chartered:
  1. Tell your employer that you are going for Chartered Status and what help you need from them, but don’t expect them to do it all for you – it’s your career!
  2. Based on your academic qualifications and discipline focus, decide on an appropriate professional institution and whether to go for Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Geologist or one of the other options;
  3. Find out if anyone in your organisation is already chartered or working towards it through this institution. They can be a useful information source or mentor;
  4. Contact the institution and make contact with one of their training officers. They can look at where you are now and guide you on what you need to do to get there, and may be able to put you in touch with a mentor;
  5. Carry out a personal Gap Analysis and work out what you need to achieve, how you will achieve it and when you need to achieve it;
  6. Treat it like a project at work and plan it with milestones, deadlines, decision points and reviews – plot it on a Gantt Chart and hold yourself to the deadlines you set;
  7. Rigorously record anything you do that can be classed as Continuing Professional Development – not just external training courses or conferences. Health and safety briefings, familiarisation with British Standards or other standard texts, internal QA and project management training – it can all help;
  8. Note down lessons you learn from key projects – not just the ones that you feel proud of, but also the ones you wish you could forget! This will make it easier when you come to write up your core competencies;
  9. Give yourself plenty of time to prepare your submissions. It will be a slog and take longer than you think;
  10. Make sure that if you need sign-offs from your superiors at work, you get them before you or they move jobs.
