Gareth Llewellyn, Chairman, CL:AIRE
Managing Director of Sustainable Business Strategies, Anglo American.
“My interest in CL:AIRE stemmed from my rooted beliefs in sustainable development, which has been reflected in all of my Executive and Non-Executive positions held within industry, committees and Governmental agencies. I firmly believe in CL:AIRE’s objectives and see the opportunity to build this organisation to lead on a broader range of critical issues that the UK will increasingly need to address. I personally believe in promoting low-energy remediation and in bringing marginal land back into economically beneficial use, and have a particular interest in overseeing CL:AIRE’s lead in the UK’s Sustainable Remediation Forum”.

Professor Jimmy Kao, Institute of Environmental Engineering, National Sun Yat-Sen University. Board Member of TASGEP (Taiwan Association of Soil and Groundwater Environmental Protection).
“It was a great honor for us to visit your association. We also greatly appreciate the effort and wonderful hospitality that you showed us in London.
It was very obvious that you and your colleagues spent considerable time to make our visit welcoming, organised and fruitful. We were so impressed with your achievements and we really learned a bunch from the program, workshop, and site visit that you arranged. We certainly appreciated the extra knowledge I have gained about soil and groundwater skills and technologies described at the workshop and meetings.
We hope we do meet again at some time and also that we are able to continue the exchange of information and knowledge for the benefit of both countries. Thanks again for making our visit truly memorable and we are greatly indebted to you.”
Trevor Beattie, HCA Director of Strategy, Performance, Policy and Research.
“I was first introduced to CL:AIRE almost 10 years ago, when they were in their infancy. From the start a close relationship formed between CL:AIRE and English Partnerships. Initially this was through the work being carried out by English Partnerships to clean up some of England’s most challenging contaminated sites under the National Coalfields Programme (NCP) and more recently through work in helping develop the first National Brownfield Strategy for England. That work is now being taken forward by the Homes and Communities Agency and CL:AIRE continues to provide support both through its work to encourage sustainable remediation techniques and by working with us to develop a skills strategy for the Brownfield sector.
Over their 10 years of operation, CL:AIRE’s reputation has been built on delivering evaluated case-studies, promoting emerging scientific technologies, and demonstrating their applications in managing the challenges of Brownfield regeneration and remediating contaminated land. The organisation is a trusted operator informing a network of private and public sector bodies, encouraging and enabling them to adopt improved methods and technologies in contaminated land management.
CL:AIRE’s position means they can, and have, either supported, catalysed or managed progressive UK initiatives. I am pleased to see CL:AIRE leading the CLUSTER Project which we envisage will bring forward sites for redevelopment which otherwise may not have been economically viable to do so. I am also especially encouraged to see CL:AIRE leading SuRF-UK, the Sustainable Remediation Forum, in progressing an industry-wide framework to enable balanced decision making on remediating land, as we envisage that this will complement The Code for Sustainable Homes. Indeed, CL:AIRE’s work will add value to the Homes and Communities Agency’s integrated programmes that will grow from our single conversations with local authorities. I wish CL:AIRE success in building on their achievements in the next 10 years.”
Dr Paul Leinster CBE, Chief Executive, Environment Agency.
“I’d like to congratulate CL:AIRE on all of their achievements and the good reputation they have earned over the past 10 years. The Environment Agency recognises CL:AIRE’s independent status, their success in raising standards and the valuable support they provide to the UK Brownfield sector. I look forward the Environment Agency and CL:AIRE continuing to work together to create a better place.”
David Oram, National Grid and SAGTA speaking at Code of Practice launch, 11 September 2008.
“This risk based approach offers potential for fundamental change to remediation economics and sustainable use of materials.”
Prof. Mike Ramsey, Sussex University.
“CL:AIRE has been invaluable to the development of our innovative research on cost-effective site investigation.
CL:AIRE has always been very helpful and supportive in both developing new ideas, and also in finding ways to convert them into practical tools to help Brownfield development.”
Dr Russell Thomas, Parsons Brinkerhoff.
“I feel CL:AIRE make a very valuable contribution to the management of contaminated land in the UK, the technology demonstration projects are an important part of this process.”
Phil Crowcroft – Partner, Environmental Resources Management (ERM)
Chair of the SiLC PTP.
“It is brilliant to see CL:AIRE enter its second decade. They have played such a substantive role in raising knowledge, awareness and standards around land remediation, and as Chair of the SiLC PTP, I look forward to working with them in the future on developing a Skills Development Framework for the Brownfield sector.”
Andy Fraser, MP TerraVac UK.
"We are very pleased with the final document - it is clear and well presented, and we feel it does justice to the project, and the effort involved from personnel involved. As a result of the CL:AIRE TDP document we have received several expressions of interest for our technology plus invitations to talk at several high profile environmental events later this year. We would definitely submit further applications, as and when we feel they are suitable, and would recommend this process to other organisations."
Mike Pearl, UK AEA.
“10 years of CL:AIRE – that’s hard to believe, but what a 10 years and where would we be without CL:AIRE ? From an organisation initially set-up to promote and build confidence in the use of technology-based solutions for contaminated land remediation, CL:AIRE has grown and is now involved in much wider aspects of contaminated land management and site restoration. As the current Chairman of the Technology Research Group, it is good to see that whilst CL:AIRE’s portfolio of activities has grown, it still maintains its initial role in providing excellent, credible demonstration and applied research reports and bulletins which are focused on Application In Real UK Environments - long may this continue. Happy anniversary to CL:AIRE – well done to all those involved, and I look forward to many more future developments.”
David Lerner, FREng
Professor of Environmental Engineering
Head of Groundwater Protection and Restoration Group, & TRG Member.
"In the Groundwater Protection and Restoration Group, we find that running our research projects as CL:AIRE projects gives significant added value. The scientific value comes from the reviews done by the TRG at proposal stage and again at the end when we are preparing bulletins summarising the key results. In addition, the easy access to users of research through distribution of the bulletins and the opportunities to present at CL:AIRE events is a great resource.”
Colin Cunningham FRSA CBiol CEnv MIBiol MIEnvSc
Director, Scottish Environmental Technology Network (SETN)
Contaminated Land Assessment & Remediation Research Centre (CLARRC).
"If you have something to tell the UK contaminated land community then CL:AIRE offers the most wide reaching and consistently high quality dissemination route via their web site, publications and their very popular events. When you add training, networking and lobbying to the list of their activities it is easy to see why after 10 years they continue to go from strength to strength."
