About us

Who we are

Contaminated Land: Applications in Real Environments (CL:AIRE) is a respected independent not-for-profit organisation established in 1999 to stimulate the regeneration of contaminated land in the UK by raising awareness of, and confidence in, practical and sustainable remediation technologies.

We are one of the leading organisations within contaminated land, fulfilling a need for objective, scientifically robust appraisals of remediation technologies and effective methods for monitoring and investigating sites.

Our unique Technology and Research Group (TRG) draws on some of the foremost professionals and academics within the field to provide credible, third party appraisals of remediation technologies.

CL:AIRE's Cause

CL:AIRE has a unique environmental role in business and society. We exist to promote a very particular cause: remediation. We help organisations manage the wellbeing of their land and water resources.

All our efforts are focused on enabling the sustainable remediation and regeneration of brownfield and contaminated land in the UK. Our goal is to return land and water to good health, ready for effective economic and social use.

This is CL:AIRE’s unique cause: making land and water fit for purpose.

The Challenge

The Environment Agency has estimated that 300,000 hectares of land at over 325,000 sites in England and Wales are contaminated with a variety of pollutants. On average 250 new sites have been classified as contaminated each year since 2000.1

Using landfill alone is no longer a sustainable option. But the remediation and re-use of contaminated and brownfield sites allows this land to be used for essential housing, commercial or environmental development whilst also helping to protect valuable greenfield sites.

Our work promotes the clear benefits of remediating and re-using contaminated land such as:

  • Bringing commercial, environmental and business value back to the land
  • Enabling economic activity and inward investment
  • Reducing contaminated soil taken to landfill.

Our Objectives

We are committed to increasing the uptake and development of innovative and practical solutions to the remediation of contaminated land. Our expertise enables us to focus on the following core goals:
  • To provide a unique system of independent appraisals for technologies, monitoring and site investigation techniques to give confidence to site owners and developers
  • To disseminate scientifically credible and practical information on contaminated land and remediation to all interested parties
  • To provide invaluable support to private and public bodies in accelerating the sustainable regeneration of contaminated land
  • To promote business opportunities for all our partners, by linking problem holders with appropriate solutions.
