As ReCon Soil gets underway, staff from CL:AIRE recently visited Plymouth to meet with the other UK ReCon Soil project partners from the University of East Anglia, University of Plymouth and Eden Project Learning.

The visit included a tour of a Fixed Soil Treatment Facility, and subsequent tour of Plymouth University's Derriford Research Facility, to learn how each could play a part in the implementation of ReCon Soil.

UK Remediation, Supporter Members of CL:AIRE, hosted the ReCon Soil project partners at their new Cornwall Soil Treatment Facility, recently opened at Wheal Jane Earth Science Park in Truro. The facility, funded by a grant from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), accepts non-hazardous and hazardous material, offering sustainable and landfill tax-free contaminated soil disposal.  

At the University of Plymouth’s Derriford Research Facility, Professor Mathew Upton led the project partners on a tour of his laboratories, where they conduct antimicrobial research. It is hoped the facilities could be utilised to enable better understanding of soil health.

The ReCon Soil Project brings together scientists, industry and educators to revolutionise how waste material from construction projects is managed; researching the potential for wastes to be reused in the development of new, reconstructed soil materials. You can read more about the project here.
